Netscape Gecko is the revolutionary open source embeddable browser designed to support open Internet standards such as HTML 4.0, CSS 1/2, the W3C Document Object Model, XML 1.0, RDF and JavaScript. Netscape Gecko forms the platform for Netscape 6 and 7, CompuServe7, AOL for Mac OS X and the Mozilla browser (among others). Gecko is continuously evolving at http://www.mozilla.org.
Web developers must take into account the differences between these browsers and the Netscape 4.x browsers. Additionally, because these browsers each have different user agent strings, it's particularly important to set up your detection properly. Check out our Browser Detection page for more details.
These browsers fully support the W3C HTML 4.0 and Document Object Model
specifications. This compliance means that several features that developers have gotten used to in the 4.x versions are no longer supported. In fact, Netscape Gecko-based browsers are more similar to Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 than Netscape 4. This section will briefly address some of these features and possible workarounds.
