P3P Info

Overview of P3P | How to implement P3P HTTP headers | Additional Information

The w3c has created a new standard called the Platform for Privacy Preferences (P3P). This is designed to enable users to have more control over their privacy preferences. (Read an overview of w3c Platform for Privacy Preferences Project.)

The W3C suggests that web sites have (1) human-readable privacy policy; (2) P3P privacy policy or P3P policy or machine-readable policy; and (3) compact policies.

Microsoft has included an implementation of the W3C’s P3P proposal into their Internet Explorer (IE) 6.0 browser. The main functionality that has been incorporated allows the browser to check HTTP headers for a P3P Compact Policy. These P3P Compact Policies are compared with the privacy setting selected by the user to determine whether the cookie should be allowed, blocked or leashed. (Go to Microsoft.com for more information).
