Parental Controls help parents ensure their children have a fun and enriching experience online, while limiting access to some features of AOL and the Internet. Parents create a separate AOL screen name for their child, and then select one of four Parental Controls categories, based on the child's age and maturity level.
AOL has four Parental Controls category levels. Parents choose from the Kids Only (ages 12 and under), Young Teen (ages 13-15), Mature Teen (ages 16-17), and General Access (ages 18 and older) categories. Each category has a different level of access to information on AOL and the rest of the Internet and to features that allows member to communicate with others online (including Instant Message conversations, chat rooms, newsgroups and e-mail). Using the Custom Controls accessible from the Set Parental Controls window, parents can adjust the controls to best suit their child's maturity.

For example, if a child has a Kids Only designated screen name and tries to access a website, that website address will be checked against the list of approved sites and the child will not be able to access the site if it is not on that approved site list.
AOL relies on a third party vendor to help ensure that children can only access age-appropriate Web sites. Additionally, parents are able to influence the Web Controls. If a child is unable to view a site that parents think is appropriate, they can recommend the site. Additionally, if parents find a Web site that their child has access to that they feel is inappropriate, they can report a site.
